The RMA hosts two conventions per year, one in spring and one in fall, at the Edmonton Convention Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Each convention sees a variety of plenary addresses and workshops, as well as the ministerial forum and resolutions session. In addition to these events, the fall convention hosts the opposition party leader panel, as well as our RMA Board elections and partners program. Starting in Fall 2021, the RMA and Canoe Tradeshow is held during the fall convention to better serve our members as they go through the budget process within their municipalities.

During the fall convention, we present two awards as well as honour those who have passed away during the year. The awards are:
Due to the upcoming 2025 municipal elections, the RMA Long Service Awards for 2025 will be awarded at the 2025 Spring Convention instead of the Fall Convention.
Long Service Awards are open for elected officials and administrators to recognize 9, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of service. Please note that RMA does not track years of service for members.

The EOEP offers Alberta’s municipal elected officials professional development opportunities to help them effectively serve their communities.
With courses covering topics most relevant to elected officials, the EOEP ensures high-quality learning experiences. Each course is developed by subject matter experts and adult learning specialists, designed to provide valuable insights while respecting the limited time elected officials have for professional development.
The EOEP will offer the courses below during the RMA 2025 Spring Convention. Registration for EOEP courses is included in the general convention registration process, allowing you to select your desired courses when signing up for the convention.

Understanding municipal finances is critical for elected officials to govern effectively, plan strategically, and support the long-term health of their community. This extensive course provides the essential knowledge and tools needed to align financial planning with strategic priorities, assess services level demands, and make informed decisions to sustain municipal operations.
With 25 years of experience, seasoned consultant Dave McGarva from Tantus Solutions Group Inc brings valuable insights into navigating municipal financial planning and management.
Participants will learn councils role in managing municipal finances, including how strategic planning, citizen participation, and performance measures integrate into the budgeting process.
