Preamble:

WHEREAS the Alberta Government announced the SuperNet project in February of 2000 which is intended to extend high-speed Internet access throughout Alberta, particularly to the areas outside the major population areas;AND WHEREAS the Province also announced that all hospitals, libraries, government offices and schools were part of this project;AND WHEREAS it has recently come to our attention that municipal offices are not to be included in the SuperNet project;

Operative Clause:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties request the province to include the connection of rural local government offices as part of the SuperNet project.

Member Background:

In February of 2000, the provincial government announced the SuperNet project to extend high-speed Internet access throughout Alberta, particularly to those regions outside the major population areas. It was the understanding that local municipal offices would be included in this project as part of the initiative to expand high-speed Internet to rural Alberta. It has recently been learned that, while hospitals, schools, libraries and provincial government offices are to be provided this service, municipal government offices have been excluded. As the SuperNet project is an efficient and effective means to provide municipal offices, particularly rural offices with high-speed Internet it is important that the provincial government ensure municipal offices are also included as part of this project.
