Development:

The Board called together the Standing Issues Committee on Governance Infrastructure and the Economy in 2010 to review two parts of the Municipal Government Act (MGA). These two parts were Part 9: Assessment and Part 17: Planning and Development. Both papers have been submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for consideration.  These papers will provide the AAMDC with a proactive position that can be put forward when the government opens these parts for review. In the 2011-2012 budget for the Government of Alberta, there is money to begin the review of the MGA and Municipal Affairs staff have indicated that planning is underway for a review. As such, we expect this to be an ongoing issue for years to come, as a review will likely be conducted in phases.

Internal Notes:

The Board has called together the Standing Issues Committee on Governance Infrastructure and the Economy to review two parts of the Municipal Government Act (MGA). These two parts are Part 9: Assessment and Part 17: Planning and Development. The Assessment recommendations have been submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for consideration, and the Part 17 recommendations have been sent to the membership for comment.  These papers will provide the AAMDC with a proactive position that can be put forward when the government opens these parts for review. These parts were given the least attention when the current MGA was completed in 1995 and recent correspondence from the minister indicates that a review of the MGA is likely to take place beginning in 2011.
