Applications to the Watercourse Crossing Remediation Grant Program for 2023-24 funding is now open
The Government of Alberta established the Watercourse Crossing Remediation Grant Program in 2021 to provide financial and planning assistance to municipalities. This grant will assist in remediation and reclamation of roadway crossings that are causing erosion, excessive sedimentation, and fragmentation of fish habitats in Alberta. The program will fund $11.5 million of projects between 2021 and 2025. The breakdown of funding is as follows:
- $1.5M in 2021 – 2022
- $4M in 2022 – 2023
- $3M in 2023 – 2024
- $3M in 2024 – 2025
The grant application guide outlines how qualified municipalities can apply for funding. Applications are open from now until October 15, 2023, at 11:59 pm and will be considered for 2023 – 2024 funding as they are received.
As watercourse crossing owners, it is important to understand inspection and reporting responsibilities under the Watercourse Crossing Management Directive. Activities with the potential to impact water management, water bodies, fish, and fish habitats are guided by provincial and federal legislation. The owner is responsible for obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals before conducting any works. Information on the Water Act Code of Practice for Watercourse Crossings and applicable legislation can be found on the Watercourse Crossing Program website.
