Alberta Transportation amends regulation to eliminate certain permits
Alberta Transportation has amended the Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation. These updates are designed to eliminate permits that were ineffective as they were granted in 100 per cent of cases. These changes do not affect a municipality’s ability to issue road permits for municipally maintained roads.
The proposed changes, which can be viewed here, will come into force on January 31, 2020. A summary of changes of interest to RMA members is:
- Elimination of permit to move fresh eggs on banned provincial highways (a permit will still be required on banned municipal roads)
- Elimination of permits for overdimensional signs and heavy-duty bumpers on commercial vehicles
- Tri-drive trucks that align with the configurations outlined in the tri-drive fleet permit will be allowed (operators will still need to obtain a municipal permit to operate at full weight capacity on municipal roads)
- Maximum dimensions for farm equipment have increased
- Maximum height for farm equipment when towed by a truck is increased to five metres
- Maximum length and height for farm equipment towed by a tractor is increased to 30.5 metres long and five metres high
- These same maximums apply to a grain auger towed by either a truck or tractor
- Maximum height for farm equipment loaded onto a trailer is increased to five metres high (measured from the road to highest point on loaded equipment)
