Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program Funding Confirmed for 2017-18

At the AAMDC Fall 2016 Convention, Minister of Transportation Brian Mason confirmed the return of the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program for the 2017-18 fiscal year. The AAMDC is pleased with this announcement, as rural transportation funding has been an advocacy priority in recent years.

The Government of Alberta has committed a total of $35 million to the program in the upcoming budget year, which breaks down as follows:

Local Road Bridge Program ($21 million)

  • Application-based
  • Cost-shared on a 75% provincial, 25% municipal basis
  • Evaluation based on condition, functionality, risk of failure, risk of delay, local impact, and local priority

Resource Road Program ($7 million)

  • Application-based
  • Cost-shared on a 50% provincial, 50% municipal basis
  • Additional weight will be given to projects leveraging alternative funding sources (federal or private sector)

Community Airport Program ($2 million)

  • Application-based
  • Cost-shared on a 75% provincial, 25% municipal basis
  • Eligible projects include runway lighting, and capital improvements to aircraft operating areas such as the primary runway, apron, primary taxiway

Local Municipal Initiative Program ($5 million)

  • Application-based
  • Will consider projects that align with the Government of Alberta’s four priority areas (economic, social, environmental, and innovative) and are not eligible for funding under the other STIP components

The deadline to submit STIP applications is February 3, 2017. Information on eligibility criteria, application processes, project evaluation criteria, and other considerations are available on Alberta Transportation’s STIP website. The application guidelines can also be accessed here.
