The checklist is a practical and easy to use tool designed to simplify the compensation process by breaking it down into clear, actionable steps.
Ship and Rail Compensation Canada manages two funds: the Ship Fund and the Rail Fund. The Rail Fund compensates anyone affected by major railway accidents involving crude oil on a federally regulated railway. Canadians can access compensation from the Rail Fund for damages that exceed the liability limit of the railway company involved in the accident.
To help with cost recovery efforts following major railway accidents, the Rail Fund has created a short checklist for local and Indigenous governments to utilize in the event of a major ail accident involving crude oil. Municipalities are encouraged to keep the checklist accessible to use if needed.
