RMA presented to the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications regarding advertised internet speeds not meeting user experience
Bill C-288 is being reviewed by the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. The bill would require internet service providers (ISPs) to provide additional information when advertising a service such as the typical speeds achieved during peak times and other reliability metrics. The RMA participated in a senate committee meeting to speak in support of the bill as a tool to enhance ISP transparency and better inform government decision-makers of the actual rural connectivity gap. RMA President Paul McLauchlin shared the results of the RMA’s internet speed testing project, which found that in 80% of cases download speeds did not meet the speeds advertised by the users ISP.
