18As part of the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan, the Government of Alberta has set a target to meet 30% of the province’s electricity needs through renewable energy by 2030. This target is expected to be achieved, in part, through an expansion of utility-sized wind electricity generation.
The majority of this wind energy infrastructure will be located within Alberta’s rural municipalities. As such, AAMDC members must be knowledgeable of wind energy and the process through which such projects are proposed, approved, developed, and eventually, decommissioned.
The Pembina Institute has developed several wind energy-related resources that may assist AAMDC members and landowners:
- Wind Energy in Alberta: Local Government Capacity and Wind Energy
- Wind Energy in Alberta: Environment and Wildlife
- The Landowners Guide to Wind Energy in Alberta
The AAMDC will continue to share resources on wind energy in Alberta as they become available.
