The update focuses on added positions funded through the new police costing model
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has provided RMA with an update on recent officer and administrative staffing increases linked to the new police costing model, in which municipalities are required to pay a portion of front-line policing costs using a formula based on a combination of equalized assessment and population. While some of the staffing increases have been directed to rural detachments, many others have been deployed to existing centralized branches of RCMP “K” Division, which, according to the update, will provide indirect benefits to rural communities.
RMA expressed significant concerns with the model during its development and continues to question the fairness of the funding formula and the lack of local input into deploying new policing resources. However, RMA is encouraged to see progress being made in increasing staffing of some rural detachments.
