The Minister of Energy and Minerals wrote to the RMA announcing expanded tools to ensure payment of municipal taxes by the oil and gas sector
The Minister of Energy and Minerals, Hon. Brian Jean, recently wrote to the RMA announcing an expansion of policies to require payment of municipal property taxes from the oil and gas industry. The RMA shared this letter with members directly earlier this week.
The RMA is pleased to see action being taken to address a priority for its members. The letter includes an opportunity for the RMA to be involved in shaping the policy specifics. While the announcement is viewed as a positive step forward, the RMA is seeking clarity in several areas related to the tax arrear threshold and grace periods required to trigger enforcement, details on the nature of enforcement action that will be taken, reporting expectations on municipalities, and other areas.
The RMA will continue to work with the ministry to seek answers to these questions and move forward on action to address gaps in tax policy and legislation that contribute to unpaid taxes.
