Province Releases Municipal Pandemic Response Planning Guide

The guide provides a series of checklists and goals to assist municipalities in supporting local recovery planning

Alberta Municipal Affairs has released Pandemic Response Planning: A Guide for Alberta Municipalities. The guide is intended to assist municipalities in enhancing existing emergency plans, business continuity plans, and other existing plans and strategies to better prepare for the impacts of a pandemic and reduce future risks.

The guide includes a series of checklist tasks that municipalities should consider pursuing to improve pandemic recovery efforts and to mitigate potential impacts of future pandemics. Tasks are divided into the following phases:

  • Mitigation – decrease the need for emergency response in the event of future pandemics
  • Preparedness – pre-planning for service continuity during a pandemic
  • Response – options to address emergency situations due to a pandemic
  • Recovery – measures and actions taken to restore communities following an emergency event

The guide also includes a separate community relaunch planning checklist that focuses on how to return to the new normal by relaunching social and economic activity.

Municipalities are also encouraged to regularly refer to the Alberta Municipal Affairs Municipal Governance During COVID-19 website for updated information on changes to legislation and processes to due COVID-19, as well as Alberta Biz Connect for sector-specific relaunch guidelines.
