Provide Feedback on Potential Amendments to the List of Wildlife Species at Risk

Environment and Climate Change Canada is seeking feedback on Schedule 1 of SARA

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is inviting stakeholders to comment on potential amendments to the List of Wildlife Species at Risk (known as Schedule 1) of the Species at Risk Act (SARA). There are 18 terrestrial species proposed to be added or reclassified that occur in the Prairie region.

Table 1: Prairie species assessed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and eligible for addition to, or reclassification in, Schedule 1

Taxon COSEWIC Status, New Addition Species Location Consultation Path
Molluscs Endangered Black Hills Mountainsnail AB Normal (10 May 2022)
Birds Threatened Lesser Yellowlegs AB Extended (10 Oct 2022)

Table 2

Taxon Proposed Change to Schedule 1 Status Species Location Consultation Path
Birds From Threatened to Endangered Red Knot – rufa subspecies (Southeastern USA / Gulf / Caribbean wintering population) AB Extended

The feedback will help ECCC gain a better understanding of the benefits and costs of these potential lists and will inform the minister’s recommendation on whether to:

  • List the species under SARA
  • Not list the species under SARA
  • Refer the species back to the COSEWIC

ECCC has provided the following background documents to help stakeholders draft their feedback:

Feedback can be emailed to the Species at Risk Registry at SARAregistry@ec.gc.ca. The deadline to provide feedback to ECCC is:

  • May 10, 2022 for species under a normal consultation process (see table above)
  • October 10, 2022 for species following an extended consultation process (see table above)

If you have any questions on the consultation process, email Wendy Eskowich at Wendy.Eskowich@ec.gc.ca.
