The federal government is seeking feedback on new measures to reduce pollution from Canada’s landfills
The federal government recently released a discussion paper titled Reducing Methane Emissions from Canada’s Municipal Solid Waste Landfills. The purpose of this discussion paper is to seek input on the proposed objectives of regulations developed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) to reduce methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills and address key questions related to reducing landfill methane emissions. In addition, the federal government is seeking input on whether the regulations could achieve long-term emission reductions through increased diversion of biodegradable waste and increased use of landfill methane as a source of low carbon energy.
The deadline to provide feedback is April 13, 2022. Feedback can be emailed to creditscompensatoires-offsets@ec.gc.ca.
The RMA plans to submit feedback on the discussion paper and is encouraging RMA members to share their perspectives to help inform it. If you are interested in providing feedback on RMA’s submission, email feedback to RMA Policy Advisor Alex Mochid at alex@RMAlberta.com by March 2, 2022.
For more information on the consultation process, email the Offsets and Emissions Trading Section at creditscompensatoires-offsets@ec.gc.ca.
