Parliamentary Report Finds Invasive Species Protections Lacking

Federal Government news release calls for immediate government actions on aquatic invasive species

On June 18, 2019, the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans released a report that found the federal government’s protections of Canadian lakes and waterways against aquatic invasive species inadequate. The report also contains nine recommendations directing the federal government to undertake immediate action to protect Canadian waters from aquatic invasive species.

The Committee heard from Canadians on the frontline of the fight against invasive species, who successfully conveyed to the Committee the acute need for stronger resources and coordination of efforts to protect of our lakes and waterways.

RMA President Al Kemmere was interviewed by the committee and RMA will continue to work with the all levels of government on this issue, as aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels are serious threats to the health of Alberta’s lakes, and have the potential to have major economic and environmental impacts in Alberta.
