On Monday April 1, 2019, Alberta’s new Fire and Building codes came into force. The new Alberta Building Code (ABC) and Alberta Fire Code (AFC) are based on the 2015 National Building Code and 2015 National Fire Code. As the new ABC and AFC are not yet publicly available, there will be no enforcement of these new codes until they are available. The new AFC will apply to construction under the new ABC, however the new ABC will require a transition period so that existing construction and plans are not unreasonably disrupted. When the new ABC and AFC are available, they can be accessed online for free from the National Research Council of Canada virtual store. Paper copies will also be offered at a reduced cost.
