Municipalities and Wetlands Management Courses

Ducks Unlimited Canada is offering free courses to municipal councillors and administrative staff. Trust us, they’re fen-tastic.

In 2013 the Government of Alberta introduced the new Alberta Wetland Policy. The goal of this policy is to conserve, restore, protect, and manage Alberta’s wetlands to sustain the benefits they provide to the environment, society, and economy. For this policy to be successful the Government of Alberta requires sustainable wetland management decisions on the landscape. Since municipalities are the primary land-use decision-makers in Alberta, they play a critical role in the implementation of the Alberta Wetland Policy. From an economic viewpoint, municipalities have plenty to gain in the strategic management of wetlands, whether it is lessening flood damage on built infrastructure (roads, bridges, and culverts) or putting dollars in the pockets of local landowners. Participants will learn how properly managed wetlands can be financially beneficial for landowners and municipalities.

Municipalities want to understand the role they play in the implementation of the policy. This course was designed by Ducks Unlimited Canada, with the support of the province, to address that question. In short, every municipality will play a different role depending on municipal goals and available resources. This course is designed to help municipalities understand where they fit in just 1 day.

Wetland management course topics include:

  • Roles that municipalities can have under the Alberta Wetland Policy
  • Mitigation process and compensation
  • Wetland replacement
  • Opportunities arising from mitigation compensation
  • Wetland restoration and construction process
  • Wetland approval process
  • Legislation and policy
  • Wetland classification and type
  • Wetland benefits and values
  • Wetland stressors and the impact of wetland loss (economic value)
  • Reversing negative effects of wetland loss (incentive programs)
