Ministerial Order Regarding Road Bans

The Minister of Transportation has signed a Ministerial Order which exempts commercial vehicles transporting essential supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic from various regulations. Notably for municipalities, this exemption includes municipal bylaws restricting the hours, parking times, and weights for commercial vehicles on local roads. This Ministerial Order does not change restrictions for bridges.

The Ministerial Order lists specific essential supplies, including:

  • Medical supplies and equipment related to the testing, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19
  • Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies to prevent the community transmission of COVID-19
  • Food, paper products, and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centres or stores
  • Raw material for the production of the above items
  • Fuel

Municipal bylaws and road bans will continue to apply for other commercial vehicles not transporting essential supplies.

These exemptions will be in place until August 14, 2020, or earlier if terminated by the Minister.
