The Government of Alberta wants to hear from YOU!
On June 20, 2018, the Government of Alberta announced consultation with stakeholders on amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) is forthcoming. On June 27, 2018, RMA participated in a stakeholder session with Municipal Affairs. The LAEA establishes the framework for local elections in the province and is traditionally reviewed following each municipal election cycle but the LAEA has not been amended since before 2013.
The LAEA consultation process is open to the public, to enable citizens, municipalities, school boards, and other organizations provide feedback. RMA recommends that councillors and municipal staff complete the general survey individually, in addition to completing the discussion guide as a municipality; Municipal Affairs will accept a separate discussion guide for council and for administration if that represents the municipality best. The topics include: campaign finances (e.g. contributions and expenses), third-party advertising, school board trustee elections, voter identification, advance voting, and residency requirements. The deadline to provide feedback is July 31, 2018.
The survey is open to all Albertans, click here to begin.
The discussion guide is similar to the survey but is geared more toward organizational input, and can be accessed by clicking here.
