On November 1, 2016, the Government of Canada released their fall economic statement. The statement provides an overview of progress being made in a number of areas ranging from job creation to post-secondary education to government transparency.
For AAMDC members, the most important component of the statement is a commitment to funding infrastructure in rural and northern communities. Specifically, the Government of Canada has committed to providing two billion dollars to rural community infrastructure over eleven years. This funding will be a component of the Investing in Canada plan.
At this point, timelines, application processes, and funding parameters are not yet available. However, the statement indicates that the eligibility criteria will be broad and allow for the expansion of rural road networks and broadband connectivity, as well as other areas.
The Government of Canada expects to release funding details through Budget 2017.
