The Government of Alberta’s Seniors Property Tax Deferral program was launched in April 2013. This program helps eligible senior homeowners defer all, or part, of their annual residential property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan.
Since its inception, the tax deferral program has partnered with Alberta Treasury Branches to administer loans and disburse clients’ property tax payments to municipalities. As of April 1, 2018, program loan administration will be transferred to the Government of Alberta to streamline client service. The government will process client payments and direct deposit these payments to the municipalities on the senior’s behalf.
According to the province, there will be no impact to municipalities, other than beginning in April 2018, property tax payments for eligible clients and associated client property tax details will be provided by the Government of Alberta. In the future, the tax deferral program will be communicating directly with all municipalities to obtain the municipality’s direct deposit information. If the program area is unable to obtain the necessary information by April 2018, payments will be made to the municipality by cheque.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact the program by emailing sptdadmin@gov.ab.ca.
