The Alberta Wetland Policy provides regulatory direction to conserve, restore, protect and manage wetlands in Alberta. To support the implementation of the Policy, the Government of Alberta provides status updates and fact sheets intended to provide industry or sector specific information.
The Government of Alberta recently posted a status update on the Professional Responsibilities in Completion and Assurance of Wetland Science, Design and Engineering Work in Alberta. The update indicates that as of May 1, 2017, Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) will require signoff on regulatory documents submitted under the Alberta Wetland Policy by an authenticating professional. This supports the Practice Standard, which indicates that sign-off must be obtained by an individual who:
- Carries a professional designation with one of ten Professional Regulatory Organizations listed in the Practice Standard;
- Meet a set of competency requirements based on wetland science, design and engineering work, as set forth in the Practice Standard; and
- Demonstrate a minimum of five years of professional experience (as defined in the status update), with at least three years of professional wetland experience.
The status update indicates that AEP recognizes that individuals who have obtained experience outside of a professional designation and are currently employed in Alberta, will, under specified conditions, accept this experience as a valid contribution toward the five-year professional experience requirement. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
