Guided by the Climate Leadership Plan, the Government of Alberta is continuing to work towards addressing climate change in Alberta. To support these efforts, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon levy effective January 1, 2017.
Recognizing that this will have different impacts on different sectors, the Government of Alberta has prepared a factsheet highlighting the facts and myths of the impacts of the carbon levy on Alberta’s agriculture producers. The factsheet clarifies issues AAMDC members have raised concern with, including:
- What heating and transportation fuels to which the carbon levy applies
- Clarification on the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation
- That the carbon levy will not be charged on electricity
- Impacts associated with fertilizer prices
Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has also posted carbon levy FAQs for producers, which includes information that producers can use to improve their energy efficiency and lower the impacts of the carbon levy on operations.
The AAMDC is continuing to advocate on the carbon levy exemption on natural gas and propane used for agricultural operations and will inform members of additional information on this file as it becomes available. The carbon levy is a key item of discussion for the AAMDC Climate Change Advisory Committee.
