The Fair Deal Panel released its final report to the Government of Alberta on June 17, 2020. The report includes 25 recommendations on a variety of topics that, according to the panel, would contribute to Alberta’s fairer treatment within Canada compared to other provinces and territories. The Government of Alberta has also issued a response to the report, indicating their initial responses to each recommendation.
While nearly all recommendations would have an indirect impact on municipalities if implemented, the following may be particularly relevant to RMA members:
- Recommendation 3: Reducing trade barriers and enforcing free trade within Canada
- Recommendation 14: Create an Alberta police service to replace the RCMP
- Recommendation 18: Opt out of new federal cost-shared programs with full compensation
- Recommendation 22: Make no changes, at this time, to the administration of agreements that Alberta public agencies and municipalities have with the Government of Canada
RMA looks forward to providing input to the Government of Alberta on further review of recommendations relevant to rural municipalities.
