Call for Nominations for Potential Vice President and District 3 Elections

As a result of nominations received for the position of RMA President, a call for nominations for a potential one-year term for Vice President and District 3 Director has been issued.

According to the RMA Elections Policy, a current board member who is midway through their term (i.e., one year into a two-year term) can submit a nomination package for the position of President or Vice President without resigning from their current board position.  As such, the potential elections for Vice President or District 3 Director will only occur if the current Vice President or District 3 Director are elected as RMA President.

RMA Board Elections Policy and Procedures

The RMA Board Elections Policy and related procedures guides the process for all elections. Complete eligibility requirements for members of the RMA Board of Directors are outlined in section E of the RMA Bylaws, including that the individual must be a duly elected official for a full RMA member municipality. For the position of district directors, individuals must represent a municipality that is within the district that is up for election.

RMA Full Members interested in joining the Board of Directors are requested to review the Fall 2024 Board of Directors Elections Information Package for detailed information on board roles and responsibilities, the commitment required, and related RMA governance policies. The RMA also encourages members interested in pursuing an RMA board position to contact a current board member or CEO and Executive Director Duane Gladden to gain a full understanding of the responsibility and commitment required.

Full Members are eligible to run for the roles of Vice President and any available District Director position located within their designated district.

Proposed Bylaw Amendment Reminder

Please note that a proposed bylaw amendment is being presented at the fall convention to clarify the intent that an election for a mid-term President or Vice President can be held at the same convention as a scheduled election for other available board positions.  The complete proposed bylaw amendments were emailed directly to RMA Mayors, Reeves, and CAOs are included this in Contact, but this specific proposed amendment is as follows:

Proposed Amendments:

New 19. In the event that a current President or Vice President that is mid-term (i.e., one (1) year into a two (2) year term) submits a nomination package for the position of President or Vice President for a scheduled election at a Convention, a call for nominations for the potential vacancy of President or Vice President will be issued after the scheduled President or Vice President nomination deadline. The current President or Vice President is not required to resign their seat mid-term to pursue another position, therefore the mid-term election of President or Vice President will only take place at such Convention should the current President or Vice President be successful in being elected President or Vice President.

Revised 20 (formerly clause 19). If during any year outside of the annual election process described in Section 19, there is a vacancy in the role is that of President, the Vice President shall assume the role of interim President until such time as an election for President can be held at the next following Convention.  If a vacancy in the Board is that of Vice President, outside of the election process described in Section 19, the vacancy shall remain open until the next following Convention.

NOTE:  Nominations for Vice President are being received in anticipation that this bylaw amendment will be supported by RMA members during the AGM, enabling a potential Vice President election at the 2024 Fall Convention, if required.

All complete nomination papers for these potential elections must be submitted electronically by October 21, 2024 at 4:30 pm to the RMA Returning Officer, Todd Brand, at toddbrand@hotmail.com.
