In a continuation of the review of the Municipal Government Act, the Government of Alberta has introduced Bill 8: An Act to Strengthen Municipal Government.
This legislation is largely built from the Continuing the Conversation consultation document distributed for public input in late 2016 and early 2017. Alberta Municipal Affairs has also released a What We Hearddocument based on this public input which is available here.
The legislation addresses both new areas in the MGA and revises existing provisions. Some of these areas include:
- Collaboration with Indigenous Communities
- Parental Leave
- Environmental Well-Being
- Notification of Amalgamation and Annexations
- Intermunicipal Offsite Levies
- Conservation Reserves
- Compliance in the Link Tax Rate Ratio
- Tax Exemptions
- Corrections to Assessments Under Complaint
For more information on the changes, see the Bill 8 here, or visit the Alberta Municipal Affairs MGA Review website here. Bill 8 is expected to be passed in the spring legislative session.
The AAMDC is reviewing the legislation in full and will provide additional analysis in future versions of the Contact newsletter.
