AHS Provides Update on Improvements to the EMS System in Alberta

AHS creates plan to reduce EMS response times

Emergency medical services (EMS) in Alberta deliver essential safety services throughout the province. There has been an increased challenge for EMS systems to meet growing demand for services with strained resources.

Over the past several months, AHS has put forward several programs and initiatives to help reduce EMS response times, which has resulted in improved response times throughout urban centres in Alberta. Reporting is in early stages and does not yet account for rural EMS response times.

On April 1, 2023, AHS released an EMS Operating Plan, detailing provincial level strategic initiatives including medical first response, dispatch improvements, workforce strategies at a provincial level, and organization expectations for EMS. These efforts aim to keep AHS more accountable and better equipped to care for staff and patients. The majority of the actions outlined in the operating plan are directly linked to that Alberta EMS Provincial Advisory Committee Final Report. The RMA was represented on the committee by President Paul McLauchlin.
