The program will enable Indigenous communities, landowners, and municipalities to nominate wells and facilities for closure
The AER recently announced a new closure nomination program that will allow Indigenous communities and stakeholders, including landowners and municipalities, to become active participants in the inventory reduction process. Previously, municipalities were ineligible to nominate wells and facilities for closure.
The AER is now accepting nominations to close oil and gas wells and facilities that have been inactive for at least five years. The request can be submitted through the closure nomination form, located on the AER website. Any sites nominated under the Site Rehabilitation Program will be incorporated into the AER’s closure nomination process. Eligible sites are expected to be included in the process by the end of 2023.
This process is part of the AER’s Inventory Reduction Program and supports the province’s Liability Management Framework.
Any questions regarding this new process can be directed to closure.nomination@aer.ca.
