Comment period open for additions and change of classification of five Alberta migratory bird species
On December 29, 2018, a proposal to amend SARA for five migratory bird species found in Alberta was published in the Canada Gazette.
The proposed changes to SARA would see four bird species found in Alberta added to Schedule 1. These four species are:
- Black Swift
- Evening Grosbeak
- Lark Bunting
- Red-necked Phalarope
Additionally, the proposed changes would see McCown’s Longspur reclassified as “threatened”.
A 45-day public comment period began December 29, 2018, ending Wednesday, February 12, 2019. Click here to submit written comments via email or call 1-800-668-6767.
The federal Minister of the Environment will take into consideration comments and any additional information received following this publication and make a listing recommendation for each species to the Governor in Council.
After species are listed, recovery strategies must be published within one year for endangered species and within two years for extirpated and threatened species.
