Summary

Employees in this entry level position are capable at monitoring, operating, and repairing malfunctions for municipal water and wastewater operations. Water Plant Operator 1 employees are capable at collecting samples and identifying concentrates of chemical, physical, or biological characteristics of wastewater to comply with legislated requirements.

Utility Operators are detail oriented and have general knowledge of operational procedures. In addition they are skilled at reading and interpreting manuals, maps, and written information. This position requires analytical skills, substantial physical stamina and strength, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

This position must demonstrate high ethical standards, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide input and support on water and wastewater projects that require additional resources such as third-party contractors or Public Works crews.
  • Ensure public notification and safety requirements are met.
  • Routinely collect water samples, analyze test results, and implement the necessary adjustments.
  • Document maintenance, repair, and replacement requirements.
  • Labour duties include but are not limited to moving and adding chemicals, inspecting, testing, repairing, or replacing mechanical systems, control systems, and associated infrastructure at various MD sites.
  • Encourage and demonstrate respectful communication with MD staff, Council, members of the public when responding to inquiries.
  • Timely and accurately complete required paperwork which may include but is not limited to hazard assessments, incident reports, payroll submissions, and legislated reporting requirements.
  • Perform inspections and action items based upon mechanical readings, established policy, urgency, and impact on services.
  • Respond to and document public utility inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Attend all organizational and department meetings including but not limited to safety and tailgate meetings and organizational training.
  • Follow all Safe Work Procedures and all MD policies.
  • Provide capital project management support and building/infrastructure maintenance.

Requirements

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Minimum Level (1) in each of the following disciplines: Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection & Wastewater Treatment Certifications.  Level 2 in Water Treatment would be an asset.”
  • Proficiency in MS Office Software
  • Basic accounting skills
