What is the Opportunity?

We are currently recruiting for a Permanent, full-time Turf Technician for our Parks and Open Spaces department.

Reporting to the Manager and Leads, Parks and Open Spaces, the Turf Technician is responsible for the planning and coordination of the sports field and turf maintenance. The position is primarily responsible for the plant health care program for the Sports fields, Parks and Open Spaces with secondary responsibilities to the other functional Parks and Open Spaces areas. This position also plays a role in representing the City of Leduc with community user groups like minor soccer, softball and football and provides technical information and expertise for the daily Parks and Open Spaces operations.

Key Responsibilities

What will you do?

  • Planning yearly turf and sports field maintenance including Seasonal planning and coordination of budget, equipment and staff
  • Tendering large material purchases: shale, top dressing, fertilizer and seed
  • Liaison with community groups providing technical advice on turf maintenance practices
  • Disease and pest diagnosis related to turf maintenance
  • Assist the Parks Supervisor with staff and equipment coordination with User groups or Community initiatives
  • Supervision and monitoring of turf maintenance crew’s daily work and associated contractors to ensure City standards are being met
  • Timely response to Customer Service Orders or other customer service requests with respect to Turf Maintenance
  • Following all OHSW training and standards, safe operation of Parks related equipment including aerial lift truck, backhoe, skid steer, tool cat, mowers, and other hand operated tools
  • Assist with summer and winter Parks operations, while working in all weather conditions

Requirements

What do you need to succeed?

You are the successful candidate for this position if you have the following:

  • Post Secondary degree / diploma / certificate in Turf Maintenance
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience or equivalent history in turf maintenance
  • Experience with budgets, ordering, working with contractors
  • Leadership/supervisory experience
  • Class 5 operator’s license with Q endorsement is required; Class 3 is an asset
  • Irrigation systems and maintenance experience
  • First aid certification is required
  • Certifications for various equipment operations such as tractors, mowers, backhoe, forklift, and skid steer will be required
  • Excellent independent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize changing workloads efficiently
  • Understanding and adhering to the policies, principles and practices of OH&S legislation, and the City’s requirements, as they pertain to this role
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, to enable cohesive teamwork and promote positive internal/external customer service
  • WHMIS, TDG, and OH&S certifications are considered assets
  • Pesticide Applicators License is an asset
  • Municipal operation experience is an asset
