Summary

The Supervisor, Social Policy & Innovation leads a dedicated team to support the development of cutting-edge strategies, initiatives, networks, and engagements that address complex social issues and develop social sector strategies and solutions.

Modeling a collaborative and innovative approach, this position will foster a culture of curiosity, reflection and engagement. As part of the broader department, this role will lead and coordinate innovative and evidence-based social policy, strategy and community-based initiatives by responding to emerging research, themes and needs of the community, Strathcona County and Council while bringing clarity to complexity for a sustained and positive impact.

Drawing on systems thinking and design, the Supervisor will oversee a team dedicated to working with community groups and organizations to build connections and collaboration to support strategic thinking on social direction and develop social sector strategies and solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, coach and mentor the social policy and innovation team and engage with the Family and Community Services management and leadership team
  • Lead a team in providing strategic direction for policy, strategy, community-based initiatives, governance practices and engagement
  • Supervise and support the development of social policy and strategy documents and manage complex changing issues and priorities
  • Oversee and support the development of reports and presentations to Council and Executive Leadership team
  • Convene, facilitate and mobilize networks and catalyze community engagement, supporting strategy development and managing day-to-day activities of partnerships
  • Oversee and design research projects related to Strathcona County’s social issues and community outcomes as identified by Council, the County, the community and the department

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, including social sciences and humanities
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working as a generalist in a broad range of areas, design for social impact, social policy, non-profit, business, or other broad-ranged fields
  • Previous supervisory experience would be considered an asset
  • Ability to plan for, manage and successfully complete multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Ability to develop and leverage relationships: a track record of building trust and sustaining excellent internal and external relationships
  • Curiosity to learn about the world, human behaviour and the motivations that lie beneath the surface
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and rapidly transition between tasks while meeting deadlines and priorities
  • Demonstrates leadership by articulating the program and department vision, effectively motivates and guides others toward these goals, can see both the “big picture” and “operational” perspectives
  • Ability to independently think, as well as the ability to make decisions and facilitate decision-making in others
  • Experience developing social impact and outcomes measurement frameworks and reporting approaches
