Senior Municipal Engineer

Summary

Leduc County is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Senior Municipal Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, this exciting opportunity provides engineering reviews and technical support in development and subdivision planning and construction on municipal utility projects. Through managing priorities and the coordination of work, the Senior Municipal Engineer is a key contributor to the achievement of the department’s operational deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the department’s operational plan by coordinating work and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and relevant legislation.
    • Prioritizes work in a changeable environment.
  • Reviews all engineering documentation related to area structure plans, outline plans, subdivision development and lot development.
    • Ensures compliance with engineering and development standards.
    • Prepares recommendations for manager review.
  • Coordinates with the Utilities department in the design and delivery of the capital and major projects plan.
  • Confirms that projects are designed according to Leduc County standards and reflect current industry standards and practices.
  • Performs the project management for the delivery of the capital program and projects.
  • Liaises and coordinates with consultants, contractors and developers regarding infrastructure development, redevelopment and upgrading, and the issuance of Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC) and the release of securities.
  • Researches and carries out special projects, studies and reports as assigned.
  • Strives to continually enhance the quality and delivery of services through efficiencies and innovation.
  • Adheres to guidelines as set out in Leduc County’s policies and administrative directives.
  • Accountable for the work group’s compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and participation in the Health, Safety and Wellness Program.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

Must Have

  • A degree in civil engineering or related discipline is required.
  • Seven years of experience in the development, operation, maintenance and construction of roads, water distribution, wastewater collection and drainage systems are required.
  • Must be eligible for, or maintain, membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Must be able to effectively communicate complex technical information and provide consistent, friendly, professional customer service to internal and external customers in the face of ongoing change, regular interruptions and the pressure of deadlines.
  • The ability to deliver presentations, and prepare concise reports is required.
  • The ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality is essential.
  • Must have experience in project management and standards related to the construction industry, contract law, trade agreements and tendering processes.
  • Experience working on development projects and knowledge of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) is also required.
  • Proven achievement of results through efficient coordination of contractor work and project oversight is key to success in the role.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with municipal operations and knowledge of rural communities is an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is also considered an asset.
