Reporting to the Team Lead, the Seasonal Equipment Operator I (SEO) is responsible for operating light-duty municipal equipment and performing skilled manual labor to maintain and improve municipal infrastructure. Key duties include the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of roads, sidewalks, ditches, culverts, signs, park infrastructure, and municipal utilities. The SEO supports special projects and events across departments and serves as a mentor to seasonal employees, providing guidance and setting a positive example to ensure tasks are completed safely and effectively.

Compensation/Hours of Work: This position is included within the scope of the Town’s unionized setting (CUPE 2426) and has a wage rate starting at $27.00 per hour based on a 40-hour work week. The term of work is expected to be from May to August 2025, however, may adjust depending on operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform infrastructure maintenance tasks, such as road repairs, traffic sign installations, open space upkeep, and park maintenance, adapting to new tasks as needed.
  • Adhere to safety procedures and participate in hazard assessments, safety meetings, and incident investigations.
  • Safely operate and maintain vehicles and equipment related to assigned tasks, such as single-axle trucks and mowers.
  • Perform maintenance activities on Town-owned infrastructure, including roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, open spaces, trees, flowers, outdoor amenities, and trails.
  • Wash, clean, and fuel equipment as needed and report malfunctions or required repairs.
  • Conduct daily maintenance checks, including greasing, fluid level monitoring, and cleaning, to ensure proper equipment functionality.
  • Maintain accurate records for daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and operations, including vehicle inspections, pre/post-trip checks, safety inspections, material usage, and daily work logs.
  • Assist with the provision of ‘on the job’ training to new employees.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License is required.
  • Knowledge and previous experience related to municipal maintenance operations is an asset.
  • Physical ability and dexterity to perform a variety of manual tasks including heavy lifting, squatting, bending, twisting, and climbing (work is performed with exposure to outdoor elements).
  • Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact courteously and effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and mathematical skills.
  • Shifts may vary and this position may be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract Consent as a condition of employment.

 

This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs grant program and requires applicants to meet the following eligibility:

  • applicants must be between 15-30 years of age, and either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred (foreign students are ineligible) and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
