Summary

The primary role of the Safety Codes Officer, Building – Trainee is to assist the public and contractors in making application for building, plumbing, gas, septic and electrical safety codes permits. This role supports the safety codes department by data input, file management, and organization of inspections. In addition, this position will undertake additional projects and assignments as directed by the Manager of Safety Codes that provide education and experience towards achieving the necessary requirements from the Safety Codes Council to become a fully accredited Safety Codes Officer, Building.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate information, assistance and direction to the public and contractors making application for building, plumbing, gas, electrical and septic permits and requesting inspections in person and on the phone.
  • Provide administrative support and coordination to the Safety Codes Officers with various types of inspections.
  • Perform data entry compilation and reports for the Safety Codes Officers regarding permits and inspections.
  • Maintain and update the Safety Codes Officer filing systems in a timely manner.
  • Prepare written correspondence and communication messages pertaining to Safety Codes permits.
  • Collecting fees and provide receipts for payment associated with Safety Codes permits.
  • Perform other administrative duties within the office environment as assigned in order to maintain service delivery levels.
  • Under direction of the Manager of Safety Codes, complete plan exam reviews and analysis of various building permit submissions.
  • Under direction of the Manager of Safety Codes, assist with inspections of structures and completion of the inspection reports.
  • Research and drafting reports for various matters related to Safety Codes.
  • Undertake necessary education and training to become an accredited safety codes officer. These include all necessary base competency courses and technical courses related to the level of certification.

Requirements

  • All applicants for this position must provide the County with a prequalification review through the Alberta Safety Codes Council for their application to be considered. This review will outline what courses are necessary for certification as an Alberta Safety Codes Officer, Building.
  • Previous building /construction experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • The ability to successfully undertake the training required to become a Safety Codes Officer, Building. This includes providing proof of completion of any number of the required courses and training.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, diplomacy and professionalism including strong oral and written communication competence.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite and familiar with GIS applications.
  • Demonstrate exceptional work ethic, reliability and accountability.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to participate and contribute to a team environment.
