The Parks Operator will report to the Hamlet Operations Foreman, and carry out day to day tasks for the maintenance of parks, open spaces, cemeteries, sports fields, playgrounds, and pathways. This would entail horticultural duties, landscape maintenance responsibilities, playground safety inspections, minor repairs, winter snow and ice removal.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Perform the day to day maintenance and operation of outdoor rinks, parks and open spaces, cemeteries, sports fields, playgrounds, pathways, downtown streetscapes river and stream riparian areas.
- Mowing, weed trimming, garbage and litter pick up, plot marking, snow and ice removal of the areas mentioned above.
- Perform construction and maintenance tasks; operate power saw and brush cutter at ground level; falls and bucks small trees and performs related park forestry operations.
- Operates variety of heavy equipment: single axel trucks, skid steer loader, tandem trailers.
- Playground inspections to ensure equipment is up to CSA standards and is repaired in a timely fashion if defects are found. Perform preventive maintenance as required to prevent failures in the equipment, surfacing, or site.
- Designing and maintaining event and land areas that include preparation and planting of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and not limited to watering, pruning, fertilizing, cultivating, mulching and edging.
- Ensures all administrative duties of the position are performed (checklists, inventory, and reports).
- Patrols parks, checking for vandalism, damage, snow and ice checks and removal as required.
- Ensures all work is performed in accordance with workplace health and safety standards and that all County policies and procedures and provincial or federal legislation is adhered to.
- Remains current in all certification required for the position and pursues further formal training in the areas relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
- Maintains equipment and hand tools utilized in the performance of the sections tasks
- To recognize sensitive information and files that occur in the departments as required by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) while adhering to County procedures.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable Wheatland County policies and bylaws.
- Ensure compliance with OH&S including attendance at safety meetings, being properly trained in OH&S related topics, and ensuring work is completed in a safe manner.
- Relate to and communicate with co-workers, management, customers and vendors sincerely, clearly, tactfully, promptly and courteously; respond to inquiries and complaints promptly and professionally.
- Perform tasks, consistent with the position, including special projects / assignments, as may be required on an ad hoc basis.
Requirements:
- Minimum of grade 12 diploma or GED;
- 3 – 5 years of experience in a parks environment with municipal experience an asset
- Experience operating and maintaining equipment
- Mechanical aptitude and basic problem solving skills
- Requires a valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s License with “Q” endorsement
- One or more of these certificates: Turf Management Certificate, Sports Field Operators Certificate I and II, CSA Playground Certificate, ISA Arborist Certificate, Diploma in Horticulture, Landscape Gardener
- Strong organizational and time management skills
