Summary

The opportunity

Leduc County is looking an experienced and highly motivated Light Equipment Operator to join our Parks team. Reporting to the Manager – Parks, this exciting opportunity performs various labourer, duties and operates light equipment to support the maintenance of municipal parks, horticulture, and natural areas. As a member of the Parks team, the Light Equipment Operator is a key contributor to the achievement of the department’s operational deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

What you will do

  • Performs various tasks to support the daily operation and maintenance of municipal parks, road right of ways, horticulture and natural areas.
    • Maintains landscape features and vegetation along municipal trails, walkways, boulevards, municipal rights-of-ways, and parks.
    • Performs a variety of horticulture tasks for the planting, cultivating, fertilizing, pruning and watering of trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf.
    • Inspects, remedies and maintains the overall health of
    • Conducts safe herbicide application under the direction of a licensed pesticide applicator.
    • Supports shop mechanics and equipment maintenance activities.
  • Operates light equipment including but not limited to, mowers, tractors, skid steer loader, light and medium duty trucks. Capable of attaching and pulling various types of trailers.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance checks of Parks equipment and
  • Assists during the off-season, the Road Operations department with general duties as assigned, ensuring all park-related responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Adheres to guidelines as set out in Leduc County’s policies and administrative
  • Accountable for working in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and participation in the Health, Safety and Wellness

Requirements

What you need to succeed

Must-have

  • High school
  • One year of related experience in general parks maintenance, including experience using tools, equipment, and machinery necessary for maintaining and constructing park projects.
  • A service focus with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to a team environment and provide consistent, friendly, professional customer service.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Intermediate First Aid certification.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of horticultural pests and management of pest problems, landscape/home garden materials and design
  • Post-secondary education or enrollment in agricultural horticulture, plant science or related field of study or an agricultural background and/or experience.
