The Lifeguard III is responsible for the supervision of Lifeguard I and II staff, as well as Facility Attendant staff, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of aquatic facilities.

They must also provide the highest standards of lifeguarding when on deck and react to emergency situations, providing emergency aid when required. In addition, the Lifeguard III needs to have a sound understanding of water chemistry and pool operation to ensure systems run smoothly and all Alberta Health regulations are met.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Lifeguard III will directly supervise the Lifeguard I, II and Facility Attendant staff day to day
  • The Lifeguard III will assist the Lifeguard IV with the hiring, training, and ongoing development of the Lifeguard and Attendant staff to develop proficiency and consistency among the teams
  • Provide immediate and specific feedback to the part-time lifeguards and facility attendants to assist with their job performance and development
  • Train lifeguard staff in the areas of medical emergencies, emergency response, proper lifeguarding techniques/skills, operational & mechanical procedures, and public relations
  • Model effective scanning, patrolling and professionalism to ensure public safety and provide a model for the part-time lifeguard team
  • Assist in emergency situations when needed, including first aid response, directing staff and assisting with guests
  • Keep aware of standards and procedures set out by Alberta Health Services and other relevant agencies to ensure legal compliance. This includes the Broadmoor Spray Park from May – September each year
  • Monitor water chemistry and staff testing results remedy deficiencies in order to maintain exceptional water quality
  • Assist the Lifeguard IV to ensure all OH&S requirements are met for the facility and staff

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma with 4 years lifeguarding experience is required
  • Post-secondary education is preferred
  • Previous Supervisory experience, supervisory courses and training is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety, public health standards and provincial swimming pool operational guidelines
  • Subject matter expertise in mechanical operations for pools and lifeguarding systems
  • General building system knowledge and pool-specific equipment knowledge such as filtration systems, chlorination systems and pool controllers. Ability to trouble shoot operational issues
  • Ability to lead and supervise a large group of staff, gather feedback and involve them in decision making where possible
  • Ability to make quick decisions in an emergency, both medical and operational
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Current certification in:
    • National Lifeguard Award
    • Aquatic Emergency Care
    • Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED
    • Pool Operator Level I and II (preferred)

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check 

  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time

  • Available to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, including at least 1 evening shift per week. Schedule may vary during shutdown periods, staff training and hiring. On-call availability to support part-time staff outside of regular working hours
