The Special Areas Board is seeking a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic to provide leadership and hands-on expertise in maintaining and repairing a large fleet of heavy equipment. Reporting to the Shop Supervisor, this role oversees journeymen and apprentices, ensuring efficient scheduling of personnel, resources, and equipment to maintain a safe, productive work environment. while participating in a combination of shop and field service, repairs and maintenance.

This position is based in Youngstown, Alberta, at our state-of-the-art, 19-bay equipment and roads service facility. The Special Areas Board operates a large-scale municipal road construction and maintenance program, managing a modernized fleet of over 300 pieces of heavy equipment. Our commitment to preventative maintenance and repair ensures operational efficiency and longevity of equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:
• Perform preventative maintenance on highway transport vehicles, construction and earthmoving equipment, and industrial tractors.
• Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, trucks (gravel, water, and oil distribution), motor graders, crawlers, tractors, self-unloading earthmoving equipment, packers, fire engines, and smaller equipment.
• Utilize Scan Tool Technology to diagnose breakdowns on trucks and equipment where applicable.
• Inspect, adjust, test, and repair key systems, including:
*Engines (spark ignition and diesel) *Steering, cooling, and braking systems
*Drive lines and suspensions *Electrical and hydraulic systems
• Conduct Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certifications as required.
• Monitor, evaluate, and manage bulk oil inventory, ensuring stock levels align with par levels set by the Shop Supervisor.
• Maintain shop equipment on the heavy-duty side, including the parts washer, hoisting tools, overhead crane, and floor hoists, following manufacturer specifications.
• Supervise journeymen and apprentices, delegating tasks with clear instructions and conducting follow-ups to ensure quality work.
• Lead by example in safety compliance, conducting safety meetings and enforcing workplace safety standards in alignment with the Special Areas Safety Program and policies.

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
• Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic certification valid in the Province of Alberta.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Technician.
• Commercial Vehicle Inspection experience is an asset.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally using courtesy, tact, and discretion when addressing requests, complaints, and clarifications.
• Proven judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze, interpret, and modify methods and procedures as needed.
• Physical capability to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Intermediate computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• This is a designated safety sensitive position and mandatory pre-employment drug testing will be conducted
• Valid Class 5 AB Driver’s License required – Class 3/Air (Q) Endorsement is an asset
