Summary

Reporting to the Facility & Waste Manager the Facility Maintenance Operator is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of the various County facilities. This role involves handling basic repairs, performing routine inspections, and keeping equipment and systems running safely and efficiently. As a key member of the Big Lakes County team, you’ll help maintain a safe working environment for everyone. While the position includes a variety of tasks, we provide the tools and training to ensure your success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry repairs.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify issues and ensure everything is in good working order.
  • Respond to maintenance requests promptly and efficiently.
  • Assist supervisor with external vendors for more complex repairs when needed.
  • Keep records of maintenance activities and manage supplies.
  • Assist with setting up or breaking down events or meetings as required.
  • Follow Big Lakes County safety guidelines to ensure a secure working environment.
  • May be required to train for and participate in any emergency response declared by the County.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational/Technical training in facility maintenance or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in building maintenance or a similar hands-on role.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, and HVAC systems.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a current driver’s abstract.
  • Current criminal record check.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:

  • Proficiency in operating computers, knowledge of Microsoft Suite and familiar with databases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact calmly and courteously with ratepayers, employees, management, and council.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance tasks, including lifting heavy objects.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Strong analytical thinking, planning, and prioritization skills.

Health & Safety:

  • All personnel working at Big Lakes County are governed by the County’s Health & Safety Policy.
  • Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with County Policies and Occupational Health & Safety Regulations
  • Must follow all safe job procedures
  • Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Environment 

  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 23 kg, as well as bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and crawling.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, loud noises and outdoor conditions.
  • Regular driving required as part of the role.
  • Normal workweek is 40 hours, with occasional overtime as needed.

 

Compensation: Big Lakes County offers an excellent benefit and pension package with a competitive salary.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm
