Position Information:

This position is responsible for the efficient and effective processing of development permit applications, sign permit applications and business licensing within the parameters of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), municipal statutory plans, the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) and other municipal policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Meets and assists applicants in the preparation of Development Permits, Building Permits and Sign Permit applications;
  2. Processes development permit applications, building permit applications and record searches;
  3. Processes business license applications when the Development Clerk is unavailable;
  4. Decides on all development-related submissions within the parameters of the MGA, municipal, statutory plans, the LUB and other municipal policies and procedures, as assigned, and presents the submissions with recommendations to the Municipal Planning Commission or Council, as required;
  5. Review building permits for compliance within the scope of the LUB;
  6. Attends Council, Municipal Planning Commission meetings and Subdivision and Development Appeal Board meetings with respect to development-related submissions;
  7. Ensures compliance with development permit conditions;
  8. Responds to inquiries from the public relating to Planning and Development matters;
  9. Reviews Real Property Reports to ensure compliance with the LUB and draft and signs compliance letters;
  10. Annual balancing of Business License GLs and
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education Experience:

  1. Post-secondary diploma/certificate in urban planning or related field;
  2. A minimum of one (1) to three (3) years’ experience in a municipal planning environment or similar setting;
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
  4. Knowledge of provincial and municipal development control legislation;
  5. Advanced public relations, written, and oral communication skills;
  6. Attention to detail, strong prioritizing and multi-tasking abilities;
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding departmental and municipal matters;
  8. Excellent problem-solving skills;
  9. Excellent reading, writing and verbal communication skills;
  10. Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills;
  11. Ability to deal with the public with diplomacy and tact;
  12. Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence; and,
  13. Subject to a criminal record check.

Salary Range

Compensation & Benefits: The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefits package for this position. The regular working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The successful applicant will also receive a free family membership to the JBS Canada Centre during the term of employment. A clean criminal records check and driver abstract will be required before an offer of employment is presented to the successful applicant.
