Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Operate a conventional transit vehicle in order to provide reliable passenger transportation
  • Successfully perform scheduled daily assigned work (fixed routes or charters); strive to ensure buses are on-time and communicate effectively with Dispatch
  • Provide excellent customer service to ensure overall customer satisfaction and interact with customers, road users and other staff in a courteous, professional manner at all times; provide a variety of general public information to customers upon request (i.e., transit routes, destinations, fares, procedures, etc.)
  • Ensure safe bus operations; conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • Collect passenger information (passenger counts, standees) as required
  • Operate buses safely and in accordance with all laws, regulations, County policies, and department procedures
  • This position will work a variety of hours including days, evenings, weekends, split-shifts, on-call and statutory holidays, and candidates must have the flexibility to work this variety of hours.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualifications or a minimum of 3 years related experience.
  • Strong customer service focus with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a customer service role dealing face to face with the public.
  • Familiarity with Sherwood Park, downtown Edmonton core and University of Alberta areas preferred.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the job, which include the ability to perform various physical tasks as part of the job duties, stand/walk for extended periods of time, operating bus controls, and aiding passengers with wheelchairs or strollers.
  • Experience working with a variety of people including those who have physical or functional limitation would be considered an asset.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-hire tablet-based assessment and an on-road evaluation. (Vehicle provided by Strathcona County Transit)
  • At the candidate’s expense, complete a Class 2 Driver’s Medical exam prior to starting training.
  • At the candidate’s expense, complete a written class 2 exam at a registry after starting training
  • Attend an air-brakes course after 1 week of training
  • At the candidate’s expense, complete a written air-brakes exam at a registry after taking the air brakes course
  • Candidates are required to pass a Class 2 road exam after two weeks of training
  • Candidates will be required to sign a return in service agreement with a term of 1 year
  • Submission of satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Experience working with a variety of people including those who have physical or functional limitations would be considered an asset.
  • Positive and professional attitude with strong communication skills to facilitate positive interactions with co-workers and customers.

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Currently hold, at minimum a valid class 5, or higher, Alberta Driver’s License (non-GDL or probationary) for at least 5 years
  • Be able to provide a 5-year driver’s abstract (current within 14 days) with:
    • No past or pending license suspensions or Criminal Code suspensions or convictions within the last 5 years
    • Less than 3 demerits for at least 5 consecutive years and no more than one moving violation/conviction within the last 5 years
    • Non-driving related suspensions of registry services, if indicated, must show a reinstatement date

Selected candidates will be invited to participate in screening and testing.

Upon hire, candidates will commence with two weeks of Class 2 license upgrade training, followed by 6-7 weeks Transit Operator training program working 6 hours per day, Monday thru Friday. Candidates will be compensated at a training rate until successfully completed the training program.
