Summary

We are seeking a skilled Control System Technician to provide technical support in maintaining our existing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), network communications, and our Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Working with the Supervisor Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering, this position will provide technical support in planning and executing capital and operational upgrades for these systems.

In this role, you will drive continuous improvement by integrating emerging technologies into PLC hardware, software, and communication systems. Additionally, you will ensure all installation changes are well-documented through comprehensive change orders.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain an expert level of knowledge and skill in the areas of PLC hardware, software and communication technology
  • Maintain documentation and change control approvals on PLC programs
  • With the approval of the Supervisor, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) and/or Manager, manage change, additions or removal of logic to maximize performance of programs
  • Plan, maintain, document and integrate field points to the SCADA system
  • Maintain documentation and integration of various communication methods for accessing remote equipment from the central control room for data transfer
  • Maintain internet security software/hardware to effectively ensure integrity of SCADA system
  • Keep apprised of the latest technology in communication protocols for data transfer
  • Provide software, hardware and communication protocols to support new applications/programs while ensuring vendor compliance and reduce the risk of service interruption due to implementation and upgrade conflicts
  • In consultation with the Supervisor, EIE, provide short and long term planning of PLC software and hardware, Remote Telecommunication Units (RTU) and ancillary equipment specifications for operating and capital budget consideration
  • Assist the Supervisor, EIE, with the planning, implementation and management of Electrical/Instrumentation (EI) and SCADA systems for County’s projects and contracted facilities implemented by department
  • Provide electrical/instrumentation field support
  • Provide electrical/instrumentation assistance for preventative maintenance, emergency work and collective work to maintain department services in the event of electrical/instrumentation shortages

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma in Electrical or Instrumentation Technology or certification as a Certified Control System Technician (CCST)
  • Minimum of three years of experience related to SCADA systems (Experience with VTScada would be considered an asset)
  • CET designation would be considered an asset
  • Alberta Journeyman Instrument Technician certificate would be considered an asset
  • Alberta Journeyman Electrician Certificate would be considered an asset
  • Strong proficiency in case note documentation, data collection, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance with program and funding requirements, while effectively using databases and Microsoft Office Suite to manage and organize information
  • Comprehensive knowledge in programmable ladder logic within supervisory control & data acquisition system (PLC systems include Emerson/GE, Schneider Scadapack and Siemens)
  • Capacity to fully analyze department operations and objectives, understanding the problems and identifying potential improvements
  • Solid technical knowledge of electrical/instrumentation ladder logic control installations
  • Solid technical foundation encompassing logical and analytical thinking, demonstrated ability to investigate, design and implement system solutions in SCADA
  • Solid technical knowledge of Internet Protocol Address networks including managing secure routers
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships internally and within Regional Water Service Commissions
  • Proficient at managing time and multiple concurrent priorities effectively and efficiently, strong and well-developed planning, organizational and leadership skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time

Salary Range

$47.04 - $50.43 per hour as per AUPE Collective Agreement
