Summary

The Special Areas Board is seeking a Road Construction Foreman to manage road construction projects and lead a seasonal crew of 6 to 14 employees. Reporting to the Superintendent of Roads & Equipment, this role is responsible for scheduling manpower and equipment, ensuring efficient workflow, and maintaining a safe, productive work environment.

This position involves operating equipment as needed, particularly for snow removal, pit stripping and reclamation in the winter months, and performing minor repairs during the off-season. Strong leadership, communication, and a commitment to safety are essential to support a positive work environment and ensure the successful delivery of road construction projects within the Special Areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crew Supervision: Lead a road crew, assigning tasks, monitoring work quality, and ensuring all crew members adhere to safety standards. Provide coaching, performance feedback, and support.
  • Scheduling & Workflow: Develop and implement effective schedules for crew and equipment use, ensuring the efficient flow of work and resource allocation.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain and submit logbooks, safety records, project start-up documents, and records for asset management. Track and report project costs and work progress. Ability to interpret and understand engineered road profiles.
  • Mobile Camp Management: Oversee and assign responsibilities for the mobile camp, ensuring it is safe, operational, and meets the needs of the crew and scope of project. Train and guide operators on the care, servicing, and safe operation of heavy and light-duty construction equipment.
  • Performance Management: Conduct performance appraisals for assigned employees and participate in hiring processes in accordance with Special Areas Board (SAB) policies.
  • Safety Leadership: Support the Special Areas Safety Program and Substance Abuse Prevention Policy, promoting a safe, harassment-free work environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 or GED Grade 12 education. Post-secondary certification in a related field or equivalent experience preferred. A combination of related training experience and education will be considered
  • Five (5) years of progressive supervisory experience in road surfacing, construction, or a related industry
  • Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy, tact and discretion in dealing with requests, complaints and clarification of information; proven ability to use good judgement to interpret, analyze and modify methods and procedures.
  • Physical capability to perform the job duties required – lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Intermediate computer skills with average working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite; general understanding of 3D Earthworks and Trimble Setup.
  • This is a designated safety sensitive position and mandatory pre-employment drug testing will be conducted on newly hired employees
  • Valid Class 5 AB Driver’s License – Class 3/Air (Q) Endorsement is preferred
  • The incumbent will be in camp during the road construction season

Salary Range

Annual Salary at $69,159 - $84,464 depending upon experience, training and education
