Summary

Position Summary

Reporting to the Sergeant, Community Peace Officer I, the Community Peace Officer I will provide education, enforcement and investigative services with respect to Municipal bylaws and Provincial Statutes.  The Peace Officer will collaborate effectively and maintain strong working relationships with the RCMP, local community groups, and other professional entities, both internal and external to the organization.  The Community Peace Officer I will seek opportunities and ensure excellent customer service to residents and visitors through the course of their duties.

Key Responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Is responsible for the education and enforcement of Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes that are within their appointment.
  2. Acts as a Peace Officer by observing traffic, conducting traffic stops, issuing warnings, violation tags or provincial tickets.
  3. Receives and investigates complaints involving bylaw violations, including issuing tickets, advising the complainant with respect to action taken, and performs additional follows up with complainant when necessary to ensure compliance.
  4. Provide advice and information to the Sergeant, Community Peace Officer I on matters relating to Peace Officer activities, training, education, enforcement, and investigation.
  5. Maintain an inventory tracking system of all required equipment and supplies. This is to include planning for scheduled and regulatory equipment maintenance and/or servicing.
  6. Provide information and recommendations for the operational maintenance of all enforcement equipment and vehicles.
  7. Provide input on performance measures, policy development, enforcement measures, and staffing levels to meet operational demands.
  8. Ensure appropriate and timely response levels are maintained.
  9. Be a resource to Municipal staff regarding safety, education, and enforcement.
  10. Always maintains a high standard of dress and deportment, while on or off duty.
  11. Maintain a level of fitness to fulfil the requirements and duties of the position.
  12. Compile and provide monthly performance statistics to the Sergeant, Community Peace Officer I that will highlight all CPO activities, number of investigations, officer’s calls for service and tickets issued.
  13. Ensure all files are correctly produced and submitted in accordance with GOA Solicitor General reporting procedures.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Skilled in exercising sound judgement when dealing with difficult situations and the ability to recognize and react appropriately to dangerous situations.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation is required.
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning
  • Demonstrated skill and experience interpreting and applying various levels of legislation.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Safety, Traffic Safety Plans and the ability to develop a Traffic Safety Calendar.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and programs such as ROADS/MOVES, JOIN, and CPIC.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a recognized two-year diploma related in Justice Studies, Law Enforcement, Conservation Enforcement or Criminal Justice.
  • Minimum of one year of diverse law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction program from the Solicitor General.  Including the following:
    • Qualification for OC spray.
    • Qualification in Threat Pattern Recognition.
    • Qualification in Emergency Vehicle Operations.
    • Qualification in Radar traffic enforcement.
    • Qualification in LIDAR traffic enforcement.
    • Qualification in ASP Baton.
    • Consideration may be given to applicants who have the ability to obtain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation.
  • Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (PARE) or equivalent.
  • Emergency vehicle operators experience and training certification (EVOC)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers’ license and a satisfactory Drivers Abstract.
  • Standard First Aid and Basic CPR certificates.
  • Naloxone Administration certificate
  • BEM, ICS 100 and 200 or ability to obtain.
  • Clear Criminal Record including Vulnerable Sector.
  • A minimum of 18 years of age.
