The City of Brooks requires a Community Peace Officer (CPO) in the Fire Services Department. This position preserves and maintains public peace and safety by enforcing assigned Bylaws and provincial statutes. The CPO assists the public in understanding and abiding by such legislation.

PURPOSE:

This position preserves and maintains public peace and safety by enforcing assigned Bylaws and provincial statutes.  The Community Peace Officer (CPO) assists the public in understanding and abiding by such legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs duties of a Community Peace Officer, adhering to the program’s policy and procedures manual;
  • Performs duties as a Bylaw Enforcement Officer by educating the public and enforcing all assigned municipal Bylaws and provincial statutes;
  • Performs the duties of an Animal Control Officer, Business Licence Inspector and Weed Inspector;
  • Accomplishes, wherever possible, voluntary compliance with Bylaws;
  • Performs traffic safety enforcement, including active patrols and check stops;
  • Assists and works cooperatively with the R.C.M.P. and other enforcement agencies as required;
  • Employs positive public relations practices and promotes public awareness in area of responsibility according to approved standards;
  • Investigate complaints and prepare case files arranging for timely follow-up, including court action;
  • Keeps senior management advised of major incidents and pertinent information;
  • Ensures that appropriate documents, records and files are generated and maintained, as may be required, to support prosecutions and to ensure efficient and accurate functioning of job responsibilities;
  • Promotes and delivers various safety programs, in cooperation with the Safe Communities Committee, including but not limited to: bicycle safety, school crossing patrols, Superkids patrols and pedestrian safety;
  • In cooperation with management and supervisory personnel, drafts and amends Bylaws as required;
  • Diligently and professionally patrols the City of Brooks;
  • Serves documents as required; and,
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Alberta Public Security Peace Officer Program for a Community Peace Officer Level 1 or equivalent policing designation and experience;
  • Eligibility to hold an appointment as a Community Peace Officer in Alberta;
  • Ability to safely and properly operate a law enforcement vehicle and all related enforcement equipment with a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence;
  • Clean driver’s abstract;
  • Valid Alberta radar operator’s certificate or the ability to obtain;
  • Oleoresin Capsicum Aerosol Training, Expandable Baton Certification and Radar/Lidar training within the previous three (3) years would be an asset;
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Ability to execute computer-based inquiries into the City’s databases;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office;
  • Ability to interpret and apply Alberta Provincial and Municipal legislation;
  • Experience working with Alberta Provincial Statutes, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement or the Traffic Safety Act would be an asset;
  • Ability and willingness to perform the duties of a Community Peace Officer, Business Licence Inspector, Animal Control Officer and Bylaw Enforcement Officer under emergency conditions and in all types of weather conditions;
  • Ability to relate professionally and courteously to co-workers, fellow law enforcement officers and members of the public;
  • Ability to handle potential conflict situations, deal with stressful situations and react with good judgment, diplomacy and tact;
  • Ability to hold confidential matters in strict confidence;
  • Proficient reading and writing skills;
  • Ability to problem solve with little or no direction;
  • Ability to use personal discretion in decision-making;
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, including public speaking; and,
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills and work independently with minimal supervision.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefits package, with this position falling within the scope of the Collective Agreement between the City of Brooks and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1032.
  • This is a permanent full-time position.  The Collective Agreement, including wages, can be found online at www.brooks.ca.
