Summary

The Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 invites applications for the position of Agricultural Technician. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Team Lead II, Agriculture in the performance of all agricultural duties in the M.D.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and assist seasonal staff with weed control through mechanical, chemical, and biological controls (complying with the provincial and federal regulations set out in the handbook of “Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides” consistent with standards and good practices set out under the Professional Vegetation Managers Association of Alberta (PVMA)).
  • Coordinate the vegetation control through mowing and weed reduction programs.
  • Select the appropriate herbicide for specific weed infestations and supervise the mixing of herbicide.
  • Maintain complete records of all pesticide applications as required for pesticide sales, handling, use and application regulations of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).
  • Identify and aid in the control of horticultural and crop pests such as diseases & insects.
  • Conduct or assist with on-farm rat inspections in Range 1 as per agreement with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and maintain records of bait inventories.
  • Serve as an appointed inspector under the Agricultural Weed Act and the Agricultural Pest Act.
  • Collect and grade seed samples at the Seed Processing facilities on an annual basis and participate in the annual inspection.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and assist with agricultural rental equipment as required.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Safe operation of a motor vehicle with and without a trailer in tow.
  • Promote a positive safety culture by engaging personnel in developing safe operating procedures and hazard assessments.
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid pesticide or authorized assistance pesticide license.
  • Valid rodenticide license.
  • Current Form 7 permit.
  • Class 5 driver’s license good standing.
  • Heavy equipment experience is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and diligently as part of a team or independently with minimal supervision.
  • Mechanical skills are an asset.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with and respond to inquiries from all levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and ARC GIS.
