Summary

Strathcona County is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable professional to manage projects and provide expert planning guidance to Council, internal departments, the development industry, and the public. 

This role works collaboratively with internal departments, external agencies and the development industry to ensure land use proposals align with the organizations goals and policies to achieve the County’s long-term vision. As a specialized municipality, Strathcona County also offers the unique opportunity to contribute to planning initiatives in both rural and urban settings.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and provide advice on the Municipal Government Act, Statutory plans, the Land Use Bylaw, as well as related strategies, frameworks, regulations, policies and procedures for a diverse range of internal/external customers
  • Prepare, process and facilitate applications related to new area structure plans, land use bylaw zones, and subdivision applications
  • Prepare, process and facilitate applications related to amendments to the Municipal Development Plan, area concept plans, area structure plans and the land use bylaw
  • Prepare reports and presentations for Council, the Subdivision Authority or internal/external stakeholders on current planning projects
  • Respond to external and internal referrals for various land use related applications and projects
  • Attend or plan open houses and public meetings on behalf of the Land Development Planning Branch
  • Provide support for long range planning projects and development permitting, as needed
  • Work to obtain professional affiliations and have a comprehensive knowledge of current applicable legislation, legal precedents, new trends and literature

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post Secondary Degree in Planning or a related field with 3 to 5 years professional planning experience or experience related to the functions of the position
  • Technical knowledge of the practices and principles of community planning
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, provincial and municipal legislation, policies and programs, as well as the ability to integrate/utilize them in planning and development projects
  • Excellent public relations, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills as well as facilitation and mediation skills with the ability to guide outcomes through public presentations and written reports
  • Ability to carry out duties with minimal supervision and to take initiative to complete projects
  • Ability to achieve practical results allowing strategic and timely adjustments to work programs in a complex and growing environment
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to write and interpret policy and regulation
  • Strong organizational and records keeping skills to ensure appropriate information management
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team to promote corporate and Planning & Development Services’ goals and objectives to clients or members of the public

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
