Strathcona County has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Environmental Planning Specialist. This role primarily provides professional expertise for county drainage issues but also provides land use planning and environmental management expertise.

This position assists all departments with determining environmental impacts caused by county operations and construction as well as provides support in mitigating and complying with municipal, provincial and federal policies and legislation.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a technical working group of multidisciplinary professionals on drainage issues
  • Conduct field and desktop assessments in support of drainage issues and makes recommendations on solutions
  • Conduct field assessments to determine biophysical considerations for subdivisions, development and construction activities, including analyzing and identifying impacts with regards to land use
  • Coordinate and complete Environmental Framework programs, projects and initiatives
  • Lead air, water, land and biodiversity monitoring
  • Supervise and direct consultants and contractors to ensure work is performed in compliance with policies, standards and safety requirements
  • Provide accurate, technical information related to Agriculture and Environment programs, projects and initiatives to internal departments, external stakeholders and residents

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary degree in Environmental Studies and 1 year experience in the environmental field or a post-secondary diploma in Environmental Studies and 3 years’ experience in the environmental field
  • Eligible for designation as a Professional Agrologist or Registered Technologist in Agrology or Professional Biologist would be an asset
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal policies and legislation
  • Ability to work and participate in a team environment and at times lead and supervise the team
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills are essential to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary teams and the general public
  • Ability to effectively convey technical concepts for all audiences

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
