Summary

The Transit Inspector provides day-of-operation supervision and direction for Strathcona County transit services, ensuring efficient and reliable service delivery. This role encompasses two core functions: firstly, the provision of exceptional customer service through service monitoring, in-field adjustments, operational support for bus operators, incident management, and coordination with regional transit partners; and secondly, the effective supervision of Transit Operators, including performance management and team building.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support Transit Operators, ensuring adherence to schedules and compliance with policies and procedures
  • Directly supervise unionized employees (over 20 direct reports), including hiring, performance management, coaching, evaluation, and disciplinary actions
  • Monitor and adjust conventional bus service, implement route detours, manage special events and charter services, and oversee bus staging
  • Generate reports on key performance indicators, implement and enforce Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies, and promote continuous improvement
  • Ensure the safety and serviceability of roadways, stops, shelters, and vehicles
  • Enforce Transit Bylaws, issue violation tickets, and address security concerns
  • Coordinate with Control and Staffing Dispatchers to resolve service issues and provide information to other departments
  • Liaise with Emergency Services, various Strathcona County branches, and Edmonton Regional Transit partners
  • Act as a Transit Bylaw officer, ensuring knowledge and enforcement of relevant bylaws
  • Make sound, independent decisions based on customer needs, service efficiency, and operational requirements
  • Understand and support customers with mobility challenges, as well as assist vulnerable or at-risk customers

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High School Diploma, supplemented by courses in Administration, Human Relations, and Organizational Behaviour
  • Minimum of five years of combined experience, including three years in a transit environment and two years of related experience
  • Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transit operational policies and procedures
  • Proven ability to analyze information and make timely decisions, particularly in challenging situations
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to exceptional customer service
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in team building, mentoring, and mediation
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs
  • Proficiency in computer systems and applications, including the Microsoft Office suite
  • Thorough knowledge of the Strathcona County route network and the Edmonton Capital Region street system/traffic regulations
  • Knowledge of Strathcona County Transit Bylaws and the Alberta Traffic Safety Act as it pertains to public transit vehicles

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 2 Driver’s licence with air brake endorsement
  • Submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with fewer than 7 demerits
  • Submission of satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Must be able to pass a pre-hire tablet-based assessment and an on-road evaluation (Vehicle provided by Strathcona County Transit)
